Luxury bedding vs. cheap bedding - what are you paying for?
There are many perks to purchasing luxury end bedding over low priced options. If you have a large budget and money is not your primary concern, shopping for luxury items is a given, but what about those who have to worry about the budget more? What are you really paying for when it comes to this higher price category?
Shopping for comfort items for a bed is just like shopping in any other product category. The only way to made educated decisions is to know exactly what is being offered at each price point.
Fabric Weight: Everything is thicker and cozier in the luxury end of the market. You can expect higher thread count sheets that are softer and more resistant to wear as well as thick blankets and comforters that do not thin out or wear through very quickly.
Look for sheets that hit at least the 400 thread count mark, though true luxury sheets will range upwards of 1000 thread count easily. The higher the count the more comfortable and durable they are going to be.
Fabrics/Materials: The biggest downfall to cheaply made bed items is the use of synthetic fibers, fake materials, and chemically processed fabrics and fillers. This can actually set off allergies for many people.
Today's luxury items are made from pure cotton, silk, cashmere, and even specially processed bamboo and hemp. While the price is going to be high for brand names that use this type of material and fibers exclusively, the difference will be so enticing every time you lie down to rest.
Details: You don't need bright colors or elaborate patterns to really make an impression. Even the most basic blanket or sheet set will have great visual appeal if it is made from luxury materials. For instance, a plain white comforter can look exquisite if it is made of soft silk with precise detailing.
If you really want to make a statement in your home, look for bed pieces that offer subtle details such as special stitching and different fabric textures.
Color Options: Not only do top-of-the-line bed products sometimes offer less common color options and combinations, you can often find products that vary the color of stitching and other fine details. This means you can find the perfect bedspread or sheet set to match other decoration features in your bedroom.
Extras: If you want only the best, then you have to throw in at least one item that has a special touch. Look for products that offer the option of having your monogram or other personalized embroidery stitched into the fabric.
For instance, if you are putting together a bed for a new baby you may want to add in blankets and sheets with the little one's initials or name and birth date embroidered into top quality, super soft fabric. This is a super sweet touch that many parents are now having done for their children.
In most cases, the investment in higher quality bedding will pay off in the end. While cheaper products may wear out or develop holes, you will have to replace the higher end products less often, if at all.
